Ann Z

I’m Ann Z, and I started this blog about our adventures in getting glasses for our daughter, Zoe. The Z girl got glasses at 14 months to correct Strabismus due to farsightedness. She’ll have strabismus surgery at the end of August, though she’ll still need glasses. I have another blog, the tragic optimist, that is focused more on parenting after infertility, though since our child happens to have glasses, that topic certainly comes up a bit.

Ann W

I’m Annfelicia (or just Ann W), another mom dealing with glasses and the under 5’s. My son Franklin will be 5 in April ‘09 and has worn glasses now since January 2008.  For some reason, it took me until his annual check-up in Jan of ‘09 to completely understand what his vision issue is:  Franklin’s left eye is normal, but his right eye is smaller than his left, basically growing at a slower rate.  This difference in size means his right eye isn’t as strong as his left, so he was starting to not to use it.  My eye doctor says this condition effects about 3% of the total population.  His future outlook is good; if his left eye continues to be good (my husband’s vision is 20/20, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed), they might move him to wearing a contact lens in his right eye instead of glasses around 11 or 12, and he might be a good candidation for lasik in his 20’s.  If we hadn’t caught this condition, his right eye might have atrophied to the point of no return and he would have no depth perception.  So anyway, we are thankful we caught it early and have the means available to fix it!

Sam’s Mama

Hello all! I’m Amanda, Sam’s mom (as you can see from my uninspired username. lol) He’s 2.5 yrs old and looks like a little professor with his glasses on.

TeagansMom

I’m Karen, the Mom of two beautiful little girls. Teagan, just over 2 1/2, was diagnosed with Strabismus & farsightedness at 18 months old. The first step in correcting this was glasses. Taylor at 10 months, seems alright so far, but we are watching her closely as Strabismus can be hereditary, and probably is in our case since my husband had some Amblyopia when he was a kid. We could end up with two little ones in glasses!

Linda

My name is Linda, mom to Braden. Braden was put in glasses at the age of 15 months after he was diagnosed with Esotropia in September 07. After spending months agonizing over whether we should do surgery or Vision Therapy, we decided to go with surgery, followed by VT if necessary. Surgery was on June 9 of 2008 and has been successful so far! Braden will continue to need his glasses at least until adolescence.

connersmommie

My name is Stacie. I’m a married working mother of 3 beautiful children. Aaron is 14 and has Aspergers (high-functioning autism), Jamie (my girl) is 13 and was recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, and Conner, my 3 year old, was recently diagnosed with “late-onset” primary congenital glaucoma in his right eye. It’s Conner’s challenge in life that brings me to this blog.

tjmtoms

My name is Tiffany, I am 27 and live in Frederick, MD. I am married to a big kid- Jason; and we have been blessed with a little girl- McKenna; who is 15 months old. I am an Instructor at a local college in a Medical Assisting program. This allows me the flexibility to stay home with my daughter during the day and then work for a few hours at night so I don’t miss a thing.

amomofelly

amomofellyMy name is Amanda and I am a proud mom of 2 year old Elliana. She is in glasses after many months of patching and will be in glasses until she is old enough for contacts. My toddler 4 eyes brought me to this site and I hope I can connect and help other families of young children with glasses. For 5 years, I taught Kindergarten and First Grade. My degree is Elementary Education, and I received my National Board Certification in 2007. I am now a stay-at-home parent so that Elly can receive the best start to life possible!

suhasiniv

suhasiniHi, I’m Suhasini Vempati from Hyderabad, India. I’m 29 and a full-time mom to my 2 year old son Satya. I worked in an IT firm as a French Software tester till Satya’s birth. He was born on 27th October 2006 ( 2 weeks earlier than his due date on November 12th ). I decided to stay at home with my baby. No longer interested in a corporate life, I am now considering a switch to alternate careers. I’m also an active volunteer in Satya’s play school. My son was prescribed glasses a month ago to treat an intermittent squint( Strabismus) in his right eye, which was the result of farsightedness. He has eyesight of +6 in both eyes but strabismus in his right one. Since he can control his squint for now, he does not require any surgery and may even not require patching. A person having glasses in our culture, is embarrassed of himself as its a big deal ( not in a good way ). Satya is the only child in our families with glasses and it gets hard sometimes to reason with people why he has to wear them. I’m so happy to have found this wonderful blog where I can rely on experienced parents for advice and I hope to bring some interesting posts to you all.

GeorgeB

GeorgeB

Hi, I’m GeorgeB.  My son Nicholas, just turned 3 in August ‘09 and has worn glasses since 6 months of age.  He was diagnosed at 2 months with Ectopia Lentis, and is very nearsighted, for which he wears glasses and patches daily.  We work closely with his PO as he not only has myopia due to the Ectopia Lentis but resulting anisometropia / amblyopia due to a very high difference in the Rx in each eye.

I’ve been a regular visitor to LFE for some time, and hope to contribute any insights gained and share our adventures with you where I can.

Erin Q.

ErinQHello! My name is Erin and I am a full time mom to 3 year old Juliet & 1 year old Calvin. A few months before my daughter’s 3rd birthday my husband and I noticed her left eye turning in slightly when she was looking very closely at things. After a month or so it seemed to be getting a little worse, so at her 3 year check up with her Pediatrician I mentioned it. He suggested we see a PO, and we did a week later. She was diagnosed with Accommodative Esotropia. She was prescribed glasses with bifocals to correct her alignment and will most likely need them until around age 12 or so when she’ll hopefully grow out of the misalignment. At this point, her glasses seem to be working & she’s given us no problems with keeping them on. We’ve only had her glasses now for about 2 weeks, but so far, so good! We’re very thankful we noticed the issue and are proactively able to be treating it! This is a new world to us so hopefully hearing about our journey from the beginning will at least make others know they’re not alone!  :)

The wonderful illustrations on this blog are done by Scott Donaldson, who began wearing glasses at age 5.  Please visit his website if you’d like to see more of his work!

Hello… I thought I emailed you a response a few days ago to your question on how we got Christopher to do pressure checks in the Dr’s office. I guess it never got to you. I’ve been pretty busy so I don’t know what I “didn’t” do to get it to you!

Anyway, I POSTED a response and I finally checked out your blog here. I love it! I’d love to be a contributor to it if you’d still like me to. I have some light-hearted topics I could post about related to glasses! Christopher has had them since he was about 7 months old or so. He also has Amblyopia and we “Patch… patch… patch… ” as his other dr… Dr Homsy tells him. lol

Ok… well… let me know if you want me to contribute and what I would need to do… and check out the post on “HOW” we got him doing pressure checks. (It’s pretty long but it is indepth too.)

You can email me at: cthompsonpa@gmail.com

    Sincerely,
    Christopher’s Dad
